Redesigning how people travel, 2024

ABHI - mindless travel

Current travel apps don't put as much emphasis on making travel enjoyable as they do on encouraging users to make bookings. The goal of Abhi was to address every aspect of the user experience by combining a proactive (giving the user what's needed at that moment) and reactive (multi-modal input) approach.

How might we help users connect the dots while travelling to answer simple questions like "When do I leave home for my flight?" and "What do I do after I get there?"

Dynamic Home screen

Managing multiple travel apps can be overwhelming, especially when plans change. The Dynamic Home Screen (DHS) solves this by adapting in real time based on factors like countdown to travel, location, and trip type. It consolidates key updates—like delays, check-in reminders, and hotel info—onto one screen, making planning simpler and more stress-free.

Travel-AI chat interface

Let's be honest: traditional chatbots are, to put it mildly, incredibly annoying and ineffective. We redesigned travel AI with multi-modal input in mind. Another aspect of the current industry that is overly complicated is checkouts. In order to create a seamless, quick, and transparent process, we have redesigned the checkouts. When you check out with several items, such as a hotel stay, flight, and experience, this is known as a multi-item checkout (toggle). Enabling a user to rapidly complete the various details required for each product was the challenge at hand. To address this, we opted for both vertical and horizontal depth.

4.7% CVR achieved in beta test. With users loving the thought in the edge cases

End-to-end travel app created pretty quick with major pipeline overhaul

Gaps

Defining the MVP scope tighter and earlier would have streamlined development.

By incorporating user testing, along with methods such as usability studies, A/B testing, and in-depth interviews, we could've strengthened our UX research standards, enhanced our final designs.

Conclusion

This was Mondee's first step into the B2C space; my team and I created an app unlike any other that strives to unite the travel industry. All within a very short time frame.

The overall direction and implementation was praised by multiple stakeholders.

The beta app tests did very well, with high conversions and great reviews.
